Open Profile
Proved he was up to competing with the elite when routing one of the best fields of the season in the Players Championship at Sawgrass. He has produced just one good finish since - at Colonial in May - but would not be without hope at Hoylake. His best performance in the Open came at Troon in 1997 when finishing in a tie for fifth and a dry week on this occasion would be in his favour as he seems to relish courses which run hard and fast. Still likely to be underrated, there will be worse outside bets for the title.
