It hardly seems like four years since Els took the title at Muirfield after he outstayed three rivals in a four-hole sudden-death playoff. He came within a whisker of repeating the trick in extra time at Troon in 2004 but found an inspired Todd Hamilton too good on the day. So if the two-year cycle is to continue then Els will once again be up their challenging for the title. Els has yet to win in 2006 but looks to have moulded his schedule very much around peaking for the majors - he has taken time out for a couple of low-key practice rounds already at Hoylake and likes what he sees - so expect a big week.
