Howell's meteoric rise since beating Tiger Woods in China last November shows no sign of halting with the man from Swindon posting a convincing win in the BMW Championship at Wentworth. The doors have opened to all the big events worldwide and at one stage on the first day he found himself three clear of the US Open field. He was unable to maintain that at Winged Foot but flashed what he is capable of and a major title could well be within his capabilities somewhere down the line. Howell has played in the Open seven times, missing the cut on five occasions and posting a best of a tie for 42nd. But this is a vastly improved performer and he is well capable of being one of the protagonists come Sunday at Hoylake.
