The big-hitting Australian has always threatened to break through from the middle tier of professionals but few would have predicted such a stellar 2006 so far. A winner of the WGC World Match Play at La Costa in February, he eclipsed that by winning a dramatic US Open last month at Winged Foot when he gratefully picked up the pieces following the late demise of Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie. He produced rounds of 67-69 over the weekend at St Andrews 12 months ago to make rapid progress through the field into a tie for fifth and a repeat of that would be some achievement with the added pressure that comes with those recent successes.
