Montgomerie - disappointing day.

monty down and out again

By Ken Gaunt, PA Sport

Colin Montgomerie tumbled out of the Open in spectacular fashion at Hoylake.

Runner-up at St Andrews last year, the Scot was hoping to improve on an opening 73 on the second day.

Instead, he saw his hopes of making the cut dashed in the space of four holes on the back nine.

Montgomerie dropped five shots from the 13th and went to four over from one under - leaving him with a face like thunder as he left the 18th.

After missing out on winning his first major at the US Open last month, this was another painful experience for the 43-year-old.

He refused to speak to the media about his round, after coming home in 41 for a 75 and a total of 148.

But he was overheard to remark: "I always seem to finish four or five shots more than I should do.

"I had a chip in (at the eighth) and three birdies. But I could not hole a putt."

Montgomerie, one over overnight, began with a bogey but retrieved the situation by picking up shots at the fifth and the eighth.

Another birdie at the 10th boosted his confidence, and he was going along nicely.

But the wheels started to come off when he had successive bogeys at 13 and 14.

The rot had set in, and a double bogey at the short 15th saw his mood change. He then dropped another shot at the following hole.

Montgomerie finished with two pars but failed to make the cut in the Open for the first time since 1998 when the tournament was held at nearby Birkdale.
