Romero - eight under going into the final day.

de vicenzo inspires romero

By Carl Markham, PA Sport

Argentinian Andres Romero has revealed a few words from Roberto de Vicenzo, the last man to win the Open at Hoylake, inspired him to play well this week.

The 25-year-old shot a third-round 68 to move to eight under for the tournament and remain well set for the final day tomorrow.

De Vicenzo won in 1967, the last time the Open was staged at Royal Liverpool, and Romero is proud to be following his compatriot in playing the course.

"When he won it was way before I was born. I met him at a golf club in Argentina last year and he spoke to me," said Romero, who qualified for the Open only when England's Benn Barham missed a nine-foot putt at the 72nd hole of last week's Scottish Open - meaning the Argentinian finished joint second.

"He told me about winning over here and hoped I would carry on in his footsteps and do the same sort of thing.

"I hope I can do as well as he did and do really well for Argentina.

"I just played so well last week and I am so delighted I have carried on playing so well this week.

"The best thing is I'm eight under after three rounds, and it is just wonderful."
